Glenn Danzig is an institution of heavy rock and roll, and here he is with an exclusive interview with Sweet Phyllis. How about that! Glenn talks about his busy life, recording Black Sabbath's "NIB" and his favorite pro wrestling moves. Enjoy these exclusive Q&A outtakes from my interview with Glenn Danzig that ran in Artvoice earlier in October.
What happens when life gets serious for a guy who is known for singing about drinking and picking on the Lilith Fair? Motivated by some pretty tough issues, Lenny Lashley, former singer and guitarist of Darkbuster, brings us "Illuminator," one of his finest works. Find out about "Illuminator," and Lenny's new gig as guitarist for The Street Dogs! A good read and our first ever Sweet Phyllis exclusive!.
I did a few stories for Buffalo Bills humor blog The Kick Is Good last season, and this is one of my favorites. It chronicles the YouTube exploits of "Buffalo Hogan." Yep.
He was a Bills superfan who helped inspire the team to many poor performances in the late 2000s. There is a guy at work who kind of looks like him but I haven't worked up the courage to ask if it's him or not.
When it comes to bands that broke during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Diamond Head is among my very favorites.
Their first album "Lightning To The Nations," is just so damned consistent.
Fast, heavy and super catchy, Diamond Head should have been huge! I talked to drummer Karl Wilcox and a guitar legend Brian Tatler in April before a show in Buffalo that should have been much more well attended.
"The Easton Assassin" Larry Holmes called me at my office in Salamanca a bit out of the blue one day. I had inquired about an interview a few weeks earlier with no reply.
Then he just calls while in the car somewhere, and I start making up questions on the spot. He was so easygoing to that we eventually just started to speak naturally with each other.
It ended up being a fun chat with the former two-time heavyweight champion of the world.
I could talk to Mick Foley for a long, long time. He is one of the most barbaric and reckless performers in the history of pro wrestling, and that is saying a lot. His in-ring personae were crazy enough, but the actual brutality he himself endured was shocking.
Yet, Foley is one of the smartest, most thoughtful men in the history of the business. Now entrenched in the world of stand up comedy, I spoke to Foley a few years back before a genuinely funny show in Buffalo.
He returns to perform at Helium Comedy Club on August 28.
